LOUDreams: If you had one person to architect and mold your music after who would it be?

Chip Tha Ripper: I don’t know, man. I try to veer away from what everyone is doing. See, my thing is like, I try to stay away from everybody. That’s my thing. I haven’t really heard anyone that style is just like mine, you know, I hear other people all the time who sound exactly like someone else. I’m not really into that, because it’s all about being real to you, you know what I’m saying? It’s all about being brand new.  When you hear one of my verses I want you to be like… “Yeah, okay. This is that real shit.”

LOUDreams: When I hear your raps, all I can think of is, flow. A lot of rappers nowadays are real choppy. I think the one thing the great rappers all have in common is a flow. Guys like Jay-Z and Rakim and Nas, those guys all had flows. We are stuck in a time of choppy rappers lost because they are trying to come up with the best punch lines.

Chip Tha Ripper: That’s crazy! It’s crazy because I didn’t even know that people noticed that sh*t. It’s just the way I rap. I don’t like all those pauses and breaks. We talking about flows and I wanted to give a shout to Redman. See, I f*ck with Red’s shit, Method man and Redman. That’s my sh*t.

LD: So, what is ‘Chip’s technique’ in the booth? How and where does the magic happen? What’s the routine?

Chip Tha Ripper: I got a studio right here in my room. I record and engineer all my shit with Pro Tools (Shout out to Pro Tools and that Apple). It gets to the point where you get tired of paying $35/hr. I got tired of that shit, so I said f*ck it, let’s cut out the middleman and just get straight to it. I had to learn all of that shit. It took some time son.

LD: What is the first thing Chip Tha Ripper does when he gets out of bed?

Chip Tha Ripper: Man… When I get out of bed you might see me rollin some sh*t.  It doesn’t matter, you know, whenever I get in the mood. It’s all right here in the crib, so I don’t have to worry about having my verses ready. I could just get in the booth and spit while it’s all still fresh. I don’t sit here anymore and think, “I wish I was at the studio man…” Now, I can come up with some shit and just get in the booth and just spit. I can’t be wasting thoughts and ideas on my drive to the studio. I need that shit right next to me!! Haha… We got a Willy Wonka Factory over here. We stay on making good and new music constantly. No days off.

LD: What is S.L.A.B. ENT?

Chip Tha Ripper: S.L.A.B. ENT. is a company I founded and came up with. S.L.A.B. stands for Soul. Loyalty. And. Business. A lot of people don’t even know that shit yet, but we about to let them know haha… Everything is all about timing. We are making calculated time decisions (chuckles).

LD: When we hear Chip, we hear some KiD CuDi-Cleveland Is The Reason-type of sound in your flow. What’s that all about?

Chip Tha Ripper: Man, shout to CuDi. That’s the homie. He mad that shit a while ago too. It’s crazy how it started to catch fire way later. But, man… that’s just that real music man. It ain’t following the path of anyone or anything else. It’s just Cleveland music, real with that Mid-West touch to it.

LD: Staying on Cleveland, what is Ray Cash’s influence on Chip Tha Ripper and KiD CuDi?

Chip Tha Ripper: You know he already came through. He laid down the gravel for us to ride on with this Cleveland thing man. He already came up and now it’s nothing but much love and respect for the big brother man. That’s the homie, that’s my homie man,

LD: Cash On Delivery… That’s a dope album. Delievery and flow are on point!

Chip Tha Ripper: Awwhhh Mannn… That album was crazy!

LD: What’s dope about your sound is that you don’t worry about punch-lines. I feel like a lot of rappers today only focus on that and lose the feel for the music. How do you feel about that?

Chip Tha Ripper: When things playout you have to be on top of that really quickly. You have to understand the time of the music. There was a point in time where every line would be a punch-line in songs and it was cool. But, now it’s different. You have to pay attention to music and know when to switch it up. All of the corny people that oversaturated that and tried to sound cool lost themselves because it’s corny to be cool now. If you are weird now you are cool. Cool. Everybody wants to be what everybody is. So, we running away from the corny people by understanding the scene and the change in music. Back to the music, I switch my flow up by making less punchlines and more verses that become punchlines. Let’s call them punchphrases or punchtopics.  It’s being audacious –I want to say this but I’m not supposed to say it… Oh well – with my flow. Like Biggie he had the art on lock. Watch, a dude comes in with a no.2 pencil and draws some stick figures. Another artist puts that picture in another dimension and then another artist comes in and put in the 2nd and 3rd dimensions. In music those guys draw the blueprint and it’s up to us to bring the pictures out to life. The best artists make the simple picture abstractly-simple [Can I say that? (chuckles)].

LD: What’s going on with the KiD CuDi and Chip collabo?

Chip Tha Ripper: CuDi has been blessing us all man. He with ‘Ye right now man. About 5-6 months ago I was playing some of my new shit in the car with him, he turned down the music and was like, “Man, you trying to be in a group?” I didn’t know what he meant. I was thinking me in a group with some other dudes. And, he was like, “Me and you bro. On some OutKast shit.” I was like, “What? Hell yeah!” So, it’s on his idea and vision and I am letting him get his spin on it.  Nobody is going to be able to stop that. It’s crazy because he already got a game plan and treatment for everything already. The group is called the Almight GloryUS. It’s about to go down! We are about to be doing it for Cleveland.

LD: How is the reaction from Cleveland?

Chip Tha Ripper: It’s crazy. There hasn’t really been any shit like this in our city before. Nobody really cared about nobodies’ music until now.

LD: What should we be expecting with the upcoming mixtape?

Chip Tha Ripper: We got some fire, man. Some crazy shit man. It’s going to be a classic mixtape. People will be forced to hear my crazy hip-hop shit, you know what I’m saying? The shit that everyone is getting away from. We have a way of luring people in who normally ain’t on our sound. I have a formula to my music man.

LD: Can we get the formula? (HaHa…)

Chip Tha Ripper: When I get my verses started, I start simple. You’ll be able to remember simple. Once, you learn the first few lines, it’s a wrap.  You’ll start listening closely to the rest… That’s all I can give you man! (chuckles). The unexpected creates longevity man. Cleveland is my baby and they understand my vision, so they are helping out with my push.

LD: Wicked. What is Cleveland?

Chip The Ripper: Cleveland is two words… No Slack. There is no slack out here man. Cleveland cuts no slack. The way Philly get down on their QBs,
that’s Cleveland on everything. It’s the big brother that always hits you down to get you ready for the big things. If you are OK in general, you are wack in Cleveland. We separate the weak from the fit. Take a look man: Ray Cash, KiD CuDi, Ted Ginn Jr. (WR, Miami Dolphins), Donte Witten (Safety, Buffalo Bills), LeBron James (The guy that is not better than Kobe, oops!).

LD: What is the perfect Cleveland beat? Cleveland song? Who is on it?

Chip Tha Ripper: Myself, KiD CuDi, Ray Cash. A simple beat with a slowed down tempo so you can hear what we have to say.
